Painting and Thrifting

One Room Challenge, Week 2

It’s already Week 2 and we are plugging right along with the challenge. The first thing I’m concentrating on is painting the chair rail and below plus all the trim and doors in the room this week. If you remember, last spring we installed the chair rail that I had painted the same color as the walls.  After seeing it installed, neither one of us liked it very much. It wasn’t the chair rail, it was the color. I knew that in order for the chair rail to look good the same color as the walls, I needed to color drench the whole room.

The problem with color drenching is that Doug already thought the room was too dark for him and color drenching was going to make it feel darker.  I consider Doug to be my client here.  I want him to love his space and feel good while he’s working in the room. Doug is one of those people who gets a little bummed when it’s a cloudy day.  He craves light and sunshine.  This room is on the north facing side of the house so it doesn’t get a ton of natural light.  I decided to paint below the chair rail the same color as the window trim to lighten up the room.

It’s really doing the trick!  I still have another coat to go but check it out!

I’m also going to add another trim piece above the chair rail so I can get a super clean line against the wall color.  It’s a little extra work, but in my opinion, totally worth it! I’ll paint the extra trim piece and when I get it installed, I’ll have a crisp line and a beefier chair rail. Win-win!

The other big thing we did this week is take a little break from working and went on a little thrifting adventure!  One of our favorite places to go thrifting is Bright’s Antique World in Franklin, Kentucky. There is so much to choose from and the way the store is laid out is just fun and inviting. During the “ber” months, they host a Vintage Market twice a month and open their extra buildings to vendors selling their wares.  It’s kind of like a big yard sale or craft show.  Each vendor is set up with their specialty.  We saw Christmas shops, Halloween shops, a vintage radio shop, etc.  It was very cool! Since we have been wanting to go on one of their Vintage Market days, we decided to put down the paint gear and do a little thrifting!

I had several items on my list that I was hoping to find. The main thing I was looking for is large frames. We have a lot of framing to do to style Doug’s office, and I was hoping to buy large frames to cut the cost of custom framing.  There will be some items we will still have to get custom framed, like this very sweet jacket that Doug’s dad brought back from Vietnam for him.

That’s supposed to say “Paratrooper” lol! Still cute, we’re using it!

I found 2 large frames and are ya’ll ready for this?  They were priced at $10 each and I was able to get them both for $15! Nothing makes me feel more victorious than negotiating a deal with cash and paying a little less! Love it! 😍

I’m feeling pretty good moving into next week when I’ll be focusing on installing the picture frame molding. Don’t forget to check out the other projects at the ORC Blog and give the participants a follow on Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube!
