A Parade of Mini Projects!

One Room Challenge, Week 1

Yes, I’m at it again!  I’m as surprised you are! 😂 I’ll admit that I have home renovation fatigue right now. Since the @oneroomchallenge announced that the format this year is favoring smaller, more doable projects, I decided that I’m in! I have several projects that I’ve started and not finished (shocking, I know) so I think participating in the challenge will help me push through and usher those projects across the finish line.

What is the One Room Challenge?

For those of you that are not familiar with the One Room Challenge or the ORC as it is often referred to, it is a bi-annual event hosted by Linda at Calling it Home and media partner Apartment Therapy where bloggers, designers and content creators are challenged to make over a room in eight weeks and provide weekly updates.

I love participating in it! It builds community online and I love seeing what my friends design!  There are so many talented people out there! Fortunately, this time they’ve kindly offered a format that is a little more forgiving. If you want to do a whole room redo then go for it.  If you want to focus on mini-projects, then do that!  This time, I decided I would find a lot of joy in finishing up a few projects that I’ve started instead of beating myself up for starting another one. I will still need Doug’s skills, but not as heavily as in challenges past.  He’s getting his master’s degree so we need to let him be! 😊

I have this frustrating habit of getting excited about my next idea and wanting to start it before getting the last one completely finished. It’s tough for me to stick it out until the end because my wheels are always turning! So, over the next 8 weeks, I’ll be doing my best to get these projects finished!

Some may take longer than others, so we’ll see how this plays out. The past four seasons of the One Room Challenge have been huge room remodels and each took two rounds to get finished. Truth be told, we’re not entirely done with the last one. So, let’s add it to this list and knock it out too!

This is the room we renovated last year. It’s operational and Doug is using it. I’ve had some trouble finding some of the furniture, but we’re on the home stretch now. We just need to hang the artwork and style the room.

2. Vintage K-Cup Holder

I bought a drawer that belonged to an antique sewing machine at a vintage market and I think it will fit perfectly next to my Keurig coffee maker to hold our k-cups. It has 3 drawers that will be perfect for regular coffee, decaf and tea. As you can see, it needs a little zhuzhing and I need to give it a top.

3. Powder Room

I got a bee in my bonnet one week when Doug was out of town about removing the granite backsplash in this bathroom. I was able to remove the backsplash but there is still glue around the edge of the granite and on the beadboard. Once I get the glue off, I will need to touch up the beadboard but I know I’ll end up having to repaint the entire room. That’s a major undertaking, so I’ve put it off. I want to touch up the paint, possibly change the wall color and maybe even paint the vanity. It’s a bit ambitious but this room is dark since there’s no natural light and I want to sass it up a little.

4. Lamp Update

I have this lamp that I bought years ago from Pier One Imports. At the time it was a gorgeous statement piece in my living room. It has a red mosaic tile base and a black shade with red silk on the inside. It’s a substantial lamp and I want to update it. I have already started this project too.

5. Artillery Shell Lamp

Doug has collected an artillery shell at some point in his Army career. The artillery shell is solid brass. I thought it would be super cool to turn this artillery shell into a very cool lamp for his office.

I suspect that these 5 projects will take every bit of the 8 weeks of the challenge. I’m excited to get started and I hope you’ll be excited to follow along! Let’s DO this! 😘
